Nucleotides - Life Science

A nucleotide is a biochemical compound made of three components: a nitrogen-containing base, a ribose, and one or more phosphate groups. Nucleotides participate in nearly all biochemical processes. Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) is a universal energy currency in all biological systems and is particularly abundant in muscles where it is used for contraction. Adenine nucleotides are components of three major coenzymes, NAD+, FAD, and CoA. Cyclic AMP is a ubiquitous second messenger used for intracellular signal transduction in different organisms.

Being building blocks of nucleic acids (DNA and RNA), nucleotides are essential for proliferation of all living organisms from viruses to high eucaryotes. The needs of proliferating cells in nucleotides can be met through de novo synthesis of nucleotides or by salvage pathway.

The inborn defects in genes coding for the enzymes of nucleotides biosynthesis or salvage are known to result in severe immunological and neurological syndroms.

Targeting the enzymes of nucleotides biosynthesis is a recognized strategy for chemotherapy of cancer and anti-viral treatment.
